NHPR 2020 Primary Candidate Forums

I co-hosted hourlong interviews with Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, as well as the philanthropist Tom Steyer, in the run-up to the New Hampshire primary. These conversations broke new ground on the candidates’ health care plans, their approaches toward government oversight and more. I also worked with colleagues behind-the-scenes to ensure all of these conversations were reflective of the concerns we were hearing from voters across New Hampshire. (More on that effort here.)

The Wall Street Journal had this to say after our interview with Sen. Sanders: “Clinging to a slim polling lead in New Hampshire three weeks before the first-in-the-nation primary, Sen. Bernie Sanders probably figured he could count on a friendly reception from the Granite State’s government-backed broadcasters.[*] And Vermont’s most famous socialist certainly was treated to the soothing tones one expects from non-profit media. But there was nothing soft about the questions from New Hampshire Public Radio’s Casey McDermott.”

NPR teamed up with political reporters in Iowa and New Hampshire for candidate interviews in the early stretch of the 2020 presidential primary. As part of that series, I co-hosted interviews with Sen. Cory Booker and businessman Andrew Yang.

Panelist Experience, For Broadcast and Other Audiences

I regularly appear on NHPR’s The Exchange to talk about my reporting work or other news of the day.

Ahead of the 2020 New Hampshire primary, I offered on-the-ground perspective to CNN’s Brooke Baldwin (see below), PBS NewsHour, the NPR Politics Podcast and WNYC’s The Takeaway.

I’ve also participated in panels on politics, journalism and more, including:

Advice from Former Fellows (New England First Amendment Institute, 2020)

Is Trump Making Investigative Reporting Great Again? (Northeastern University’s School of Journalism, 2017)

A Campaign to Remember: From the Primaries to the Presidency with Penn State Alumni (Penn State University, 2016)

Other Interviews & Public Events

In June 2020, I co-hosted a conversation for NHPR’s live daily talk show The Exchange with authors and historians Alexis Coe and Erica Armstrong Dunbar about their work re-examining the legacy of George Washington. While not recorded, I also hosted a public forum with NPR’s Tamara Keith, as part of a partnership between NHPR and UNH School of Law, as well as the 2018 New Hampshire Rising Stars Awards.
